Because It Matters at Work, Too

Research on workplace civility confirms that a civil workplace is essential for good customer service, employee retention and productivity, and overall workplace health.  Consider the following:

  • Happy employees create satisfied customers who refer your business to others through positive word of mouth.
  • Civility in the workplace promotes employee retention.  On average, turnover in talent results in costs of two times the salary per employee lost.
  • In civil environments, workers can focus their time and energy on the tasks at hand – they are not distracted by workplace conflicts.
  • Civility improves morale, commitment and creativity.
  • A civil work environment promotes communication – a critical key to high productivity.

Over the past eight months, over 100 business and community volunteers have participated in creating a vision of civility for our community.  As a business leader, we ask that you too consider being a part of this endeavor.  We believe your workplace will benefit greatly from participation in this initiative in many different and possibly unforeseen ways.

Our belief is that we, as a community, can build upon each successive act of civility.  We will publicly recognize the establishments that embrace Because It Matters in the workplace.   Community members will be able to identify those workplaces by way of a “Civil Workplace” logo, which you may use on your web site, letterhead, or other written communication.  In this way, we will create new ways of making and keeping connections between employers, their staff, and their customers.
